6:00 PM - 7:00 PM ET
.1 ASHA CEUs

ASHA is moving towards a competency-based model for certification as a speech-language pathologist (SLP). Programs can capitalize on this change by not only modifying their method of assessing student knowledge and skills but also their overall approach to student learning. Most graduate SLP programs classify the majority of their coursework based on the big nine disorder areas. In addition, it is common for each of those nine disorder areas to be given nearly equal weight in terms of course credits. In many ways this view of curriculum is at odds with competency-based education which emphasizes outcomes not the amount of time spent learning each content area. This session will present multiple, alternative designs for coursework and clinical practica that more closely align with competency-based education.

Learning Objectives

- Identify which aspects of competency-based education are already present in your program and the barriers to implementing a true competency-based model.

- Describe how a program’s graduate admissions criteria, specifically prerequisite coursework, impacts the implementation of competency-based education.

- Develop at least two ways to redesign the didactic coursework and clinical practica at your university within a competency based educational framework.

Time Ordered Agenda

6:00 - 6:15 PM ET Overview of competency-based education and the traditional SLP curriculum
6:15 - 6:30 PM ET Innovative ideas/philosophies for undergraduate SLP education and how they impact graduate level education
6:30 - 6:45 PM ET Innovative ideas for graduate SLP education

This course is designed with a participation requirement that ensures meaningful engagement and learning. Participants must be present for the entire 60-minute webinar to receive the assessment. The assessment is a key component in obtaining both their certificate of completion and ASHA CEUs. In addition to standard assessments of the speaker's effectiveness and the overall content quality, participants are challenged to demonstrate practical application of the knowledge gained. The required question prompts participants to articulate and list two specific action items they plan to implement. This promotes critical thinking about how to apply new information in their professional practice with a forward-thinking response.
