Social determinants of health which are broadly defined as the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, as well as their access to power, money and resources have been shown to have a significant impact of health-related outcomes. Contemporary evidence suggests the social determinants of health can have significant influences on outcomes of adult neurogenic communication disorders. However, the specific factors that drive those disparities are less clear. This presentation will explore the contributors to differences in the outcomes of adult neurogenic communication disorders with an emphasis on strategies to reduce the differences that exists and to facilitate equitable outcomes.

Charles Ellis Jr, MA, PhD, CCC-SLP

Dr. Charles Ellis Jr., PhD is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Speech Language and Hearing Sciences at the University of Florida. Dr. Ellis is a licensed and certified speech-language pathologist. Dr. Ellis’ academic concentration focuses on adult neurogenic disorders and he teaches courses related to aphasia and cognitive disorders. His research is designed to understand outcomes associated with adult neurologically based disorders of communication and factors that contribute to the lack of equity in service provision and outcome disparities that exist among African Americans and other underrepresented minority groups.
